"Volcanic Penguin"
2010
gouache on paper
18" x 24"
Penguin imagery first came into my art back in the early 90's while I was living in NYC. My inspiration then came from the Batman movie ads, when the Penguin was the villain of that sequel. I've always been interested in animal symbolism, its ancient and ongoing expression of deeper human psychic relationship with nature. Lately I have turned my gaze toward language and in particular what feels to me is a resurgence of fringe/conspiracy/rage speech/language. One of the many subjects that this movement has tried to discount is climate change. It occurs to me now that the penguin could symbolize the canary in the coal mine and stand in for the pawn/victim/observer in this battle of words.
