IMPROBABILITIES

Belfast ME

Here I am interested in exploring the relationship between the artist and the viewer by creating drawings that confront and confound notions of authority, veracity and validity. I've chosen to use language as my medium. I am not interested in presenting language transparently; rather I want to both experience and present language as visual art. As an experience, creating hand drawn text causes me to read and re-read, often aloud, what I am transcribing or inventing, allowing me richer thought and interpretations around its meaning. By presenting language as “hand drawn” it is important to me that I have, through this presentation, created a pedestrian foothold for interpreting visual art; in their most basic form my drawings can often, at least, be read, yet their renderings are unmistakably artistic. From this beginning I often strive to distort language by reconfiguring the familiar, subverting interpretation and expectation, employing visual patterns or suggesting absolute improbabilities.
